The Fellowship standardBuilt on sixty years of interactive computing
The Association inherits a lineage of interactive computing built for the highest-stakes work there is - systems trusted because the evidence said so, not because of who built them. That standard traces to 1973, when founder John Greist and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin engineered one of the earliest procedurally-invariant interactive computer systems - the same Wisconsin work that ran directly into Epic Systems.
An invitation-only body, now open to the field
For its first nine years the Association operated by invitation - no public application route, no public-facing structure. Candidates were nominated by serving Fellows, the record of each election stayed inside the Association, and members used their standing where it counted for them, in hiring and promotion review at major technology employers.
In January 2026 one thing opened: Professional Membership is now open to direct application, and verification moved online so anyone holding a credential number can confirm it without contacting us. Fellowship did not open - it remains by nomination from serving Fellows, capped at 25 elections a year.
Recognition is earned through evidence and the judgment of peers.
